Rips and lacerations are frequent in old seismograms. These may occur more often when the seismograms are coated with an excess of fixative, in particular for the seismograms on smoked paper. The example reported here presents numerous crease marks (b) in some cases degenerated into fractures. The restoration operations, evident on the back (a), have been carried out with Japanese paper having adequate thickness. The choice of thickness is on each occasion a compromise between the need the reinforce the original support of the seismogram and the need for transparency in order to keep the annotations legible (Athens National Observatory).
